Recently, Space X sent and failed the 11th prototype of a starship with SN11. The team seems to be failing over and over, in fact, they are capturing valuable data. The mindset with doing projects right and doing right projects are parallel with this news. The iterations they are making that — failing early, failing often — will help most probably with possible success in the near future.

Doing both of them right

By the way, back to the subject, the answer is : Both. These sentences are served the portfolio and project management targets. Company strategy is kicking the portfolio management and project management realizing these ideas to tangible values. What do they have in common? Should be iterative, not linear.

Also, in between, there is program management, do these projects together. For a difference in Portfolio, Program, and Project management you can check here.

Anyway, Let’s check what does it mean these buzz (!) sentences in a detailed way.

Doing Right Projects: Proactive approach to (possible) consumer demands

It is about choosing the right pathway that also fits own capability. I am sorry to say that classic roadmap evaluations have to stop. For sure your strategy shaping your roadmap process, however, fix-framed timelines, static, sequential long-term roadmap, and possible projects will not help you out in the pipeline. It is time to agile, iterative, and most important proactive roadmaps. Some questions may arise such as how to keep sustainable business when you have an active roadmap like Mount Etna. Ready to erupt right? Well, if your products are not linear and iterative, changing day by day, why your Roadmap so?

How to : Use Agile Roadmap Process, update often your roadmap, communicate with your stakeholder & consumer, re-build it.

Doing Projects right: Be adaptive to your demand with your process

You choose the pathway, you know which route you will dive in, how about your process? As your roadmap, your project process shouldn’t be reactive. Our current environment is not even VUCA is even more than that. If you wait 3 years to kick a product to market, congratulations, you won the best old-fashioned product award. Your process should assist time to market. There is no meaning if you have a perfect idea and a perfect long waterfall process in your hand. These combinations will be not a champion. Failing and iterative is the key.

How to : Use Hybrid and Agile Project Process

Both processes should be included creative and critical thinking with applying their learnings iteratively. In the end, Buzz’s words and process are not a magic wand, just a great start-up to set up a flexible mindset and proceed in a sustainable way.
